Eva Eloise Scott and her twin brother Elijah were born Sept. 17, 1924, at Ontario, IA. Her parents were Emmett Benjamin Scott and Florence Belle (Price) Scott. Her dad’s job with the railroad moved them from Ontario to Clinton for a short time, then to Jefferson, where the family remained.
A few years after the death of Eva’s mother in December 1934, Eva moved in with Clark and Nettie Hays to continue her schooling and help in their home. She graduated from Jefferson High School in 1944. She was united in marriage to Lewis Benjamin Mullins on Nov. 17, 1946, at the Presbyterian Church in Jefferson. They made their home on the farm in Dawson Township near Paton. Their daughter Corinne Eloise was born on Aug. 29, 1950.
Eva belonged to the UMW at Paton Methodist Church and Stitch and Chat, a neighborhood club. She also enjoyed her membership and meetings of the Greene County Historical Society.
She enjoyed gardening and tending to the house yard. She kept busy with her chicken chores and helping with the other livestock and field work as was needed. She made many meals and lunches for those in the field. She sewed many of her own clothes and Corinne’s, including Corinne’s wedding gown. She did other needle work and crafts. One project she was pleased with was a “class quilt” she assembled with blocks from each of her classmates and she pieced together and had machine quilted.
The family took many Sunday drives to state parks and historical places and to visit family. Eva moved to the Regency Park nursing home in September 2011. She passed away there on February 4, 2017.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Lewis, on Feb. 5, 2006; her brothers Delbert, Elmer and Elijah; brothers-in-law Leslie Mullins and Verlin Bauer; sisters-in-law Florence Scott and Elva Mullins; and her son-in-law Vernon Brancroft on Dec. 22, 2016.
Eva is survived by her daughter Corinne Bancroft; sisters-in-law Hortense Scott of California and Vera Bauer of Gowrie; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Memorials can be directed to the Salem United Methodist Church in Paton, Genesis Development or the Greene County Historical Society.
